LIFE AFTER EHS: Following
graduation from The Ohio State University, I then graduated from Ohio
State's Medical School in 1973. I interned at the University of
Wisconsin in Madison, and then did an ophthalmology residency at the
University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. After this tour of the Big Ten,
I was a glaucoma Fellow at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in
Boston. Subsequently, I practiced ophthalmology in Akron, Ohio for
fifteen years. In 1995 the opportunity of a lifetime arose, and I
joined the University of Michigan Department of Ophthalmology
Faculty. If you ever wondered who was the first person who trained
physicians to operate independently, that was yours truly. In
addition to seeing patients, I also served as the Residency
Program Director, responsible for resident medical and surgical
education. In 2006 I retired and continue to live in Ann Arbor.
Rennie Gertz and I married in 1971 and have shared an amazing 50
years. Our daughter, Anne, lives in Milwaukee and has two sons, 10
and 12 years old. Our son, David, lives in New York, and is a
"Professional Advertiser". He has written several Super
Bowl commercials and many others you have probably seen. He is also
doing stand up comedy since his parents have supplied an abundance of
material.
