I graduated Eastmoor at age 16 and turned 18 at the height of the
Vietnam War. I was already active in the antiwar movement and
publicly refused to register for the draft. The weekend before
my trial for violation of the Selective Service Act I first really
noticed Joan Trey, a college acquaintance. She visited me
regularly during the year and a half I was in prison and helped me
adapt when I got out. We were married in 1973 and moved to
Cleveland when she started medical school in 1976. I worked as
a safety and health specialist for OSHA and the United Rubber Workers
Union, then, in 1983, with two small children and Joan still in
training I quit my good paying job and started medical school myself.
I served as director of several occupational health programs in
the Cleveland area. I worked as medical director for a workers’
compensation managed care organization from 1997-2017, and 2009-2017
caring for employees of the Cleveland VA. Now I’m almost
retired, working on-line about one-half-day per week as a consultant
to the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation. Joan and I have
two great boys, Nathan and Josh (Google his
technology articles) two beautiful daughters-in-law and three
wonderful grandchildren. I’m still catching up on years of
non-medical reading I never quite got around to while working, and
Joan and I travel when COVID permits. I loved seeing many of
you at the 56th Reunion!
